    Not as powerful as advertized, but that’s expected., March 25, 2015

    This panel packs a punch. Of course it’s not as simple as the nominal ratings; as you increase load, voltage drops, so there’s no way it churns out the advertized 2.2 amps of smooth, clean 12v. I hooked up an RC power meter to the panel which measured current, voltage, watts, watt-hours etc. in real time and for a load tried a pair of lithium ion battery chargers. These tests were done on a sunny day just before at sea-level with a good, but not perfect sun-angle, so theoretically the panel could kick out more juice, say, near the equator at high altitude, but these are a good baseline.

    Bottom line: 1.3 amps at 9.5v was the most I could get the panel to give up–a little better than 12w.

    Now, you may be saying, “But that’s only half the rated wattage! Why four stars?”

    Answer: Because that is, depressingly enough, a really good result. I also tested my previous panel, the GoalZero Nomad7, which has a rated 12v output of 4 watts. It managed to produce…no watts. The battery charger I used as a load for this experiment has a load, at idle, of less than 0.01 amps, and the GoalZero panel couldn’t do it.

    The build quality seems very sturdy–one might even say heavy, at 1kg. If the cloth that the pouch is made of is the same as the rest of the panel, it’s coated with rubber and should be fairly water-resistant.

    All in all, I doubt you’ll find a better backpacking panel for the price.

    Hello everyone. I received this product on August 6th, 2015. It came with the following items. A Sunkingdom box, a Sunkingdom foldable solar panel, an instruction booklet, 10 adapters for a laptop, adapter cord, and a feedback card. This review is for the SUNKINGDOM™ 52W 24V.

    The panel expands to about 3 ft by 1 1/2 ft. It weighs about 4 lbs. and fits nicely in a small bag or backpack (not included). The panel comes with a voltage controller and a blue LED to indicate that power is going through the panel. It’s very sturdy and can withstand hot summer conditions and is resistant to water.

    The panel has to be placed in direct sunlight to get it working fully. It must be angled properly, depending on where you are in the world, to give you it’s fullest power. Go to Google and search for solar angle calculator for the Solar Electricity Handbook to get best angle and direction. As stated in the instruction booklet, a cloudy day will cause the amount of amperage (amount of work) to go down.

    I’ve attached a Samsung Galaxy S5 and a Olympia Battery 32,000 mAh to see if they can charge at the same time. The results were disappointing. The power draw from both devices was too much, so one turned off, while the other continued charging. As soon as one device was fully charged (with automatic shutoff), the other device automatically started charging. I’ve attached a Levin 12,000 mAh portable battery and the Samsung Galaxy S5 using the Zhanyun USB 2.0 A Male To 2 Dual USB Female Jack Y Splitter Hub Charger Adapter Cable, and got the same results even when the power draw of the Levin portable battery was lower.

    I advise everyone to build a frame for this Sunkingdom solar panel using scrap wood and buying screws & hooks from either Home Depot or Lowe’s since the panel does not lay completely flat. Using the website stated above (solar angle calculator) will make it easy for you to get optimal performance. The frame takes minutes to complete and will give you better results due to a flat surface area.. Also laying the solar panel flat on the ground or at a 45° angle, as stated in the instructions, is not the best way.

    Here, in California, we have power outages some times and I use this as a backup to help in case of emergencies. Using this, combined with an external battery, can literally give you enough power to last for days. I put this on my car windshield for 8 hrs when at work to charge my external batteries. Also, always remember to cover your devices from direct sunlight and to open the windows in your car so you don’t overheat the Li-ion polymer batteries. Do not put your devices under the panels, it will overheat them. Put them under the pocket. Unfortunately, the pocket is not big enough to hold for most devices, so I use it to store the adapters and adapter cord.

    I’m very happy with this Sunkingdom panel and this might start my addiction to solar power. This will take me 4-5 years to actually recuperate the cost, but that’s fine with me. It’s free electricity!

    I’ve only taken it out in the sun once so far, but it performed well. This panel seemed to be the sweet-spot between price and watts. I already have the Instapark 10W panel, so I was looking for something that could put out higher amperage as well as charge a 12v battery. The Instapark 10W is 5V USB only and is a good small panel. The Sunkingdom 39W panel seems well constructed. The pocket is too small to be of any real use, but I didn’t buy it for its cargo capacity. It folds up nicely, but is slightly bulky at about 2 inches thick.

    I took it out at noon on a clear day and set it on the patio. It was not aimed directly at the sun but was probably within 15 degrees of perpendicular. I first used it to charge my USB battery pack that holds 4 3400mAh 18650 batteries (in parallel, so 13,600 mAh total). The USB meter showed about 4.9V and the current climbed to about 1.3 Amps within about 30 seconds. The current is limited by the device being charged, so the current was not limited by the panel in this case (see next test). The battery pack displays the percent charge and it climbed at a good pace. I didn’t time it, but it went from 84% charged to 100% charged in about 40 minutes.

    Next I plugged in my Galaxy S6 to the panel and the USB meter showed 1.4 Amps as it charged. Again, since the phone was mostly charged already, the charge current is limited by the phone charging circuit, not the panel. I did not do a test for max current from the panel, but I have no reason to believe it is below the spec. of 2.1 A. One general comment about solar charging phones and tablets directly – They are often very sensitive to voltage fluctuations (especially Apple devices). As a general rule, if clouds interfere with the sun, and the voltage drops, some devices will not resume charging once the clouds pass, even though the panel is putting out plenty of wattage. This is why it is better to charge a battery pack off the panel and then use the battery to charge the device.

    When I unplugged the USB plug, I saw the panel’s blue “power” light go out, even though it was still in full sun. I was worried that something was broken, but the USB meter still showed the panel was doing its job. Only after I folded up the panel, took it to the shade, and later took it back out to the sun for more tests, did the blue light come back on like normal. I’m not sure why it went out or what made it come back on.

    I did a quick test on the higher voltage output and it showed 22V open circuit. I bought a small charge controller (JoyiQi PWM 20A) to use with 12v battery charging, but I have not had a chance to wire it up yet. I plan to cut the cord that came with the panel and install Anderson power pole connectors so I have flexibility in how it is hooked up.

    Overall, I’m very pleased with the panel and feel more secure knowing I have a panel with enough wattage to charge devices quickly.
