HUGE capacity power bank at low cost (Too bad it has several design flaws), October 25, 2015

The Kmashi MP828 Dual USB Power Bank claims a super high capacity of 20,000mAh, yet it is priced similar to my other power banks with just half the capacity. But how does it perform electrically? That’s what I wanted to find out.

    [Output Current]
The product description of MP828 says: “Detects your device to deliver its fastest possible charge speed up to 5A”. This seems to suggest its output current can be up to 5A, but in fact it is the INPUT that is up to 5A when using the included AC-to-USB charger. The two USB ports (OUT1 and OUT2) are only rated for 1A and 2.1A, respectively.

In my actual testing, however, I found no difference between the two ports. Either one can recharge my Barnes & Noble NOOK HD+ at over 1.9A, which is very good. But when I connect another tablet to the second port drawing 1.1A, the Nook’s charging current drops to 1.5A. After trying multiple combinations, I concluded that the maximum total output current is limited to 2.6A (instead of 3.1A). This is a common problem for most dual-port power banks. One exception is the AmazonBasics PB10. Its total current is measured at 3.8A, higher than the rated total current of 3.4A.

    [Battery Capacity]
I measured the output energy of the MP828, by connecting a 2.5 ohm power resistor to OUT2 port. The unit is able to sustain 1.75-1.85A, at 4.8-4.9V, for 7 hours and 20 minutes. This corresponds to a total output energy of 63.7Wh (1.8A * 4.85V * 7.3hr). So I can estimate the internal battery capacity to have a capacity of 20,000mAh, if we assume the power conversion efficiency is 86% (20Ah * 3.7V * 0.86 = 63.7Wh).

In comparison, the AmazonBasics PB10 (rated 10,000mAh) is able to provided 35Wh

    [Battery Recharge Time]
One feature sets the MP828 apart from other power banks: It comes with a special AC-to-DC adapter, rated 5V 5A at the barrel plug. I measured the AC adapter’s standby power at 0.3W. When charging, power consumption is 26.3W initially (it drops as the battery is close to full). This is consistent with the 5V 5A (25W) output rating. Total recharge time from AC adapter is around 5 hours.

When charging through micro USB port, the input current is rated at 2A. Actual measured charging current is around 1.55A initially (drops gradually as the battery becomes close to full). Total recharge time from micro-USB port is around 13-14 hours.

    [Battery Status Indicator]
This is the worst aspect of the MP828. The 4-LED battery status indicator is tiny, weak and has extremely narrow viewing angle. I have to look at it exactly from top and center, in order to find the LED lights. If I tilt the unit by 10 degrees, the status light completely disappears!

There are 4 segments in the battery status indicator, so naturally people will expect each segment to represent 25% of capacity. But based on my observation over two discharge cycles, the indicator is highly non-linear.
    4-LED: 90 to 100%
    3-LED: 80 to 90%
    2-LED: 35 to 80%
    1-LED: under 35%

    [Pass-Thru Charging]
This is another disappointing aspect of the MP828. It does not support pass-through charging, That means while the power bank is being recharged (either through the special AC-DC adapter plug, or the micro-USB port), both output ports are turned off. This is such a pity because otherwise I can keep this power bank plugged in, and use it as an AC charging station for two other devices.

I can understand that most high-capacity power banks choose to prohibit pass-thru charging, to avoid overloading the micro-USB port. But there is no excuse in the case of MP828. Its special AC-DC adapter can supply 5A, which is more than enough to keep the two USB ports alive and still recharge the internal battery.

    [Bottom Line]
The Kmashi MP828 is very inexpensive for such a huge capacity power bank. But unfortunately I discovered it has several design flaws. Most noticeably: the poorly designed battery status indicator, and the lack or pass-through charging. So I can only give it is a 4-star rating – and that’s mostly because I’m a cheapskate.

My Favorite Portable Charger, December 2, 2016

I am a frequent flyer and I believe I have found my favorite travel buddy in this charger.

    Pros:
    – It looks and feels like a premium product. I used it for work and my coworkers have commented on how sleek it looks. It’s very well made, feels sturdy, and looks really sharp.
    – It comes with a soft felt drawstring pouch so I can toss it in my travel bag and not worry about it getting scuffed up or scratched.
-It charges like a champ! With a huge 20000mAh battery I can charge my devices several times on one business trip without even having to charge the unit back up. It seems to last forever. I would venture to say that I’ve charged my iPhone 7 about six times on a single charge.
    – You can charge two different devices at once.
    – On some chargers if you charge two devices at once there is significant slow down to get both devices to 100%. I have not noticed slow down while simultaneously charging both my IPhone 7 and my iPad Mini with this Kmashi charger.
    – One of the ports is Quick Charge compatible. I was able to use the Quick Charge function with my wife’s Galaxy S7. (Note: The Quick Charge function is not compatible with iPhones. I hope Apple gets with the times and adds that function to the IPhone 8.)
    – This charger has some sort of auto-off feature when you’re device gets to 100%. I fell asleep with my iPhone charging overnight in this unit and when I woke up I noticed the Kmashi still had almost full power. It didn’t overcharge or drain the battery or anything like that, even when left overnight.
    – It fits nicely in my back pants pocket. As you can see from my picture this unit is thinner than my finger. I go through portable chargers a lot because of how much I travel and in my experience ones like this with this much power are usually bulkier.
    – It has four LED lights to let you know it’S capacity level and another LED that lets you know if it’s using the Quick Charge feature.
    – While I’ve never needed to contact them, I’d guess this company has great customer service because it comes with a card that provides several different ways to contact them should you have questions.

    Cons:
    – While I said it can fit nicely in my back pocket this isn’t a device you would probably want to carry all day in your front pocket as in my dress pants it can be noticeable.

Overall Rating? Excellent. Especially if you’re like me and in airplanes all the time or places where charging isn’t convenient. This actually isn’t the first Kmashi charger I’ve ever purchased and after using this device it will not be my last. I love it. Highly recommended.

Product feels like premium build just like the other reviewer said. I have had other power banks before and this one feels much lighter than the highly reviewed Anker E6 in the same battery capacity class. So far it’s been charging both my phone and tablet like a workhorse without slowing down. I would definitely recommend this as an alternative to the much pricier options out there.
